The University of Texas at Austin is doing something that was thought to be heresy not three or four years ago – they are discontinuing their support for the National Merit Scholars Program. Texas is not alone, but what is more important is that if this trend continues – what will happen to the “merit” designated awards that are found on so many campuses. Will universities begin to convert their endowments to aid “need-based” awards over merit-based awards? Time will tell.
